Polaris Smart Metering is set to roll out 10 million smart electricity meters across India as part of efforts to modernise the country’s power distribution network. The large-scale initiative also includes the deployment of 1.6 million smart gas meters, marking a significant expansion of the company’s presence in India’s smart energy sector.
According to the company, the rollout will cover the full ecosystem, including meter manufacturing, communication networks, software platforms, and turnkey EPC execution under long-term contracts of up to ten years. Polaris currently holds around 10% of India’s smart metering market and aims to double its market share in the next three to five years through ongoing projects and new contracts.
The company stated that smart meters are helping utilities combat power theft, improve billing accuracy, and enhance supply reliability. By enabling real-time monitoring and analytics, the technology allows immediate detection of anomalies such as tampering or unbilled consumption, while also improving the operational efficiency of distribution networks.

With India’s renewable energy capacity now exceeding 50% of total power generation, the adoption of smart metering is becoming crucial for demand-side management and grid stability. These systems help utilities better align electricity usage with renewable generation, thereby reducing losses and ensuring more consistent energy availability.
Polaris highlighted the success of its Ladakh and Kargil project, which has become India’s first fully smart-metered grid zone. The initiative reduced power losses from over 40% to nearly zero, achieving 97–98% billing efficiency and improving supply quality for consumers.
The company’s ongoing expansion aligns with India’s broader goal of creating a digitally enabled, efficient, and transparent energy distribution system, advancing the country’s clean energy and modernisation agenda.
