NTPC Ltd is planning to establish coal gasification units with the objective of producing between 5 and 10 million tonnes per year of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from domestic coal. The initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and enhance cleaner fuel options for power generation.
The gasification units will utilise high-ash coal from NTPC’s captive mines, converting it into synthetic gas that can be used for the company’s own power plants or supplied to other industrial consumers. The project is expected to help reduce dependence on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and support India’s goal of gasifying 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030.

NTPC plans to issue technical consultancy tenders in the current fiscal year and aims to have the first gasification units operational by FY27. The move reflects the company’s intent to leverage its coal assets while integrating cleaner and more flexible fuel solutions into its existing thermal power infrastructure.
By entering the coal-to-synthetic-gas segment, NTPC is positioning itself at the forefront of India’s transition toward cleaner fuels, supporting national energy security and contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the power sector.
