Deepak Gupta has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, the country’s leading natural gas company and a Maharatna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommended his name for the top post after an extensive selection process. Gupta will take charge upon the completion of the current CMD’s tenure, pending final government approval.
With over three decades of experience in the oil and gas sector, Gupta has held several key positions within GAIL, contributing significantly to the company’s core business areas, including project management, construction, operations, and business development. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing major pipeline and petrochemical projects that form part of India’s expanding gas infrastructure.

As CMD, Gupta is expected to focus on strengthening GAIL’s pipeline network, enhancing gas marketing and trading operations, and advancing the company’s diversification into emerging areas such as hydrogen, biofuels, and renewable energy. His appointment comes at a pivotal time when GAIL is aligning its strategies with India’s broader energy transition goals, emphasising sustainability, efficiency, and growth across the natural gas value chain.
