Thermal Power Plant

Coal India Limited (CIL) and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) have signed an agreement to jointly develop a ₹21,000 crore thermal power expansion project in Jharkhand. The collaboration involves setting up two ultra-supercritical units of 800 MW each, adding a total capacity of 1,600 MW to the existing Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS).

The project will be developed as a brownfield expansion on DVC’s existing site, leveraging available infrastructure and technical expertise to expedite construction and reduce costs. Commercial operations for the new units are expected to commence by 2031–32. Coal for the power plant will be supplied by Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a Jharkhand-based subsidiary of CIL, ensuring reliable and cost-effective fuel sourcing.

According to officials, the partnership reflects the government’s broader push to augment India’s baseload generation capacity while modernising its thermal power fleet with cleaner, more efficient technologies. The ultra-supercritical design of the new units is expected to improve efficiency and lower emissions compared to older coal-based plants.

This joint venture also marks a deepening of cooperation between CIL and DVC, both key players in India’s energy sector. Beyond the thermal expansion, the two organisations are exploring opportunities for collaboration in renewable and hybrid energy projects, in line with the country’s transition toward a more diversified and sustainable energy mix.
