The state of Telangana is ramping up grid readiness and infrastructure upgrades as it braces for a looming peak electricity demand of around 19,000 MW during the Rabi and summer seasons of 2026.
According to officials, the 4,000 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Project, currently under final commissioning stages, will soon come fully online, significantly bolstering the state’s generation capacity. At the same time, coal production by Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. is being ramped up from 1.80 lakh tonnes per day to 2.20 lakh tonnes per day by November to ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply for thermal units.

On the transmission and distribution front, agencies including TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL are spearheading the rollout of new infrastructure, 72 new substations in the southern region and 31 in the north, installation of thousands of distribution transformers, and capacity enhancement at 181 Extra High Tension (EHT) substations.
Officials further emphasised advancing automation and oversight via SCADA-like systems and feeder-management tools, a move aimed at bolstering reliability, especially in rural and semi-urban networks.
With the state expecting rapid growth in EV uptake, officials also underscored the importance of expanding charging infrastructure under the PM‑eDrive Initiative, with over 3,100 potential charging locations already identified.
As Telangana prepares to meet the surge in power demand head-on, the convergence of fresh generation capacity, reinforced coal supply, and upgraded grid infrastructure is set to support its ambition of uninterrupted and quality power delivery through the coming peak seasons.
