S. Jaishankar

Addressing the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur, S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, warned that global energy trade is becoming “increasingly constricted” amid selective application of principles and inconsistent practices.

Without going into specifics, Jaishankar said that while nations preach free markets and non-discrimination, the reality often reflects strategic barriers and uneven norms: “principles are applied selectively and what is preached is not necessarily practised.”

He noted that tensions in energy supply chains and restrictions on market access have compounded geopolitical risks and affected India’s energy security. “We are meeting in complicated times. There are growing concerns about the reliability of supply chains and access to markets,” he said.

The minister’s remarks come amid growing global turbulence, including shifts in Russian oil trade, sanctions regimes, and efforts by major consumers to secure energy reliability in a multipolar world. Analysts say India is signalling that it wants to navigate these changes from a position of independence and fairness.

As India continues to bolster its energy diversification strategy, including imports, renewable expansion, and supply-chain resilience, Jaishankar’s comments underscore the government’s emphasis on fair global frameworks, predictable trade flows and non-discriminatory access to critical energy resources.
