Surya Ghar Yojna

As of July 2025, India has installed 4.9 GW of residential rooftop solar capacity under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana (PMSGY), representing just 13.1% of the target of 1 crore household installations. In a worrying sign for the scheme’s ambition, only 14.1 % of the ₹65,700 crore subsidy allocation has been disbursed to date.

The report by IEEFA and JMK Research & Analytics shows that over 57.9 lakh installation applications have been submitted, but conversion to actual installations has lagged significantly. The achievement of the broader FY2027 rooftop solar target of 30 GW now looks increasingly ambitious under current implementation rates.

State-wise performance is uneven: Gujarat leads with 1,491 MW installed under the scheme, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan, which collectively account for over 77 % of the total installs.

Analysts point to multiple bottlenecks behind the slow roll-out: low consumer awareness, restricted access to financing, fragmented supply chains for solar modules, inverters and mounting, and delays in subsidy disbursal. Unless these systemic constraints are addressed urgently, the ambitious targets set under PMSGY may remain out of reach.
