India’s total solar photovoltaic (PV) potential has been estimated at 3,343.37 GWp, underscoring the country’s vast renewable energy prospects, according to a recent report. The findings were shared during the release of the Solar PV Assessment in India (Ground Mounted) report and the inauguration of a Training Programme on Solar Cell and Module Manufacturing, organised by the National Institute of Solar Energy and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The assessment utilised high-resolution geospatial data from ISRO satellites to conduct a comprehensive land-use analysis, identifying suitable wastelands for solar power development. Critical factors such as land slope, aspect, proximity to roads, power infrastructure, substations, and evacuation routes were integrated to optimise solar exposure and infrastructure connectivity.

This is the most detailed and comprehensive assessment to date, marking the first nationwide exercise to determine India’s feasible ground-mounted solar PV potential. The study establishes India’s total potential at 3,343 GW, the highest ever recorded, representing a major milestone in the country’s renewable energy planning efforts.

The report is expected to serve as a critical tool for state agencies in planning green energy corridors, designing targeted policies, and enabling investors to de-risk projects and build confidence, providing a clear map of opportunities for scaling solar energy initiatives.
