Green Telangana

In a decisive call for climate action, Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has advocated for a robust three-pronged strategy to combat climate change and curb greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs). Emphasising that a unified approach can yield significant economic, environmental, and societal gains, the Governor stressed the need for urgent and coordinated sectoral action.

Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s global climate vision, Governor Varma highlighted the importance of involving key departments—such as energy, transport, construction, rural and urban development, industries, and SMEs—in pushing for renewable energy adoption and enhancing energy efficiency. “Energy efficiency alone holds the potential to mitigate over 40% of climate change impacts,” he noted.

A major component of the proposed roadmap includes an aggressive afforestation initiative by the Forest and Environment Department, aiming to increase Telangana’s green cover to 50% by 2047. The Governor also called for widespread awareness campaigns involving schools, colleges, and universities, with special focus on engaging women and students to promote energy conservation and sustainable lifestyles.

Stressing the importance of institutional leadership, the Governor lauded the Ministry of Power, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for supporting state governments with clean technologies and global best practices. He particularly appreciated Telangana’s initiatives to empower women in solar energy adoption.

As part of ongoing outreach efforts, A Chandra Sekhara Reddy, Southern Regional Media Adviser to BEE, and senior EESL officials briefed the Governor on recent developments in energy efficiency. They discussed the Standards & Labelling (S&L) programme, which contributes to 60% of India’s energy efficiency-related CO₂ reductions and plays a key role in the nation’s goal of cutting one billion tonnes of emissions by 2030.

To institutionalise energy leadership, Governor Varma recommended that EESL conduct energy audits at Raj Bhavan and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, with the objective of transforming them into model energy-efficient campuses. He urged collaboration with the State Energy Development Agency to ensure effective implementation.
