Nuclear Energy Project - News 5

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that India is rapidly working on 10 new nuclear reactors and has set an ambitious target to increase the country’s nuclear energy capacity tenfold by 2047.

Delivering his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, the Prime Minister said the government is taking major initiatives in the nuclear sector to meet India’s growing energy needs. “Work is progressing rapidly on 10 new nuclear reactors and, by 2047, we have pledged to increase our nuclear energy capacity tenfold… We are bringing major reforms in the nuclear energy sector,” Modi stated.

The Prime Minister underlined that India continues to remain dependent on imports of petrol, diesel, and gas, which cost billions of rupees annually. Stressing the importance of self-reliance, he said India must build energy independence.

Highlighting renewable growth, Modi noted that solar energy capacity has risen 30 times in the past 11 years. He further pointed to major hydropower initiatives, including construction of new dams, and large-scale investments worth thousands of crores in the National Hydrogen Mission.

Modi also emphasized that the nuclear sector has been opened to private participation. According to government sources, India intends to end the state monopoly over uranium mining, imports, and processing, while retaining control over spent uranium reprocessing and plutonium waste management.

The government plans to attract both domestic and foreign investments, allowing global players to hold minority stakes in nuclear power plants. Official estimates suggest that if the 2047 target is achieved, nuclear power could contribute around 5% of India’s total electricity supply, marking a transformative shift in the country’s energy mix.
