Solar Power

India has officially overtaken Japan to become the third-largest producer of solar energy in the world, according to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, citing data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

As per IRENA’s latest report, India generated 1,08,494 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power, surpassing Japan’s 96,459 GWh, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy journey.

Joshi shared the update on X, calling it a reflection of India’s growing leadership in the global renewable energy revolution. He credited the achievement to the “visionary leadership” driving India’s sustainable transition.

Supporting this momentum, India now hosts 297 active renewable energy tech companies as of May 2025, according to Tracxn. The sector has also seen significant capital inflow, bolstered by the government’s 100% FDI allowance in renewable energy without prior approval.

FDI in India’s renewable sector grew by 50% year-on-year in FY 2023–24, and by Q3 of FY 2024–25, $3.4 billion had already been invested — matching the full-year inflow of FY 2024.

With solar leading the charge, India continues to shine as a global beacon of sustainable innovation and possibility.
