Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday interacted with electricity consumers across multiple districts via video conferencing to review the state’s ambitious free power scheme, which provides up to 125 units of electricity at no cost. Calling it a “revolutionary step” for the welfare of ordinary citizens, he highlighted that 1.89 crore consumers in Bihar are availing the benefit.

Emphasising the state’s renewable energy drive, the Chief Minister noted that solar power is now installed on all government buildings and assured support for households willing to adopt solar energy. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary underlined the uniqueness of Bihar’s subsidy model, pointing out that unlike other states, where exceeding the subsidised limit results in charges on the entire bill, Bihar consumers pay only for units above 125. “The Bihar government under CM Nitish Kumar’s leadership is extending a total electricity subsidy of ₹20,000 crore,” he stated.

Energy Minister Vijendra Yadav, while appealing to citizens to use electricity judiciously, cautioned against misuse of free supply. The state government has already begun depositing the July subsidy amount directly into consumer accounts, and August consumption under 125 units will also be exempt from recharge. To raise awareness, programs are being organised at 3,000 locations across the state.

During the interaction, around 15 lakh consumers shared their feedback and experiences with the Chief Minister. The main program was hosted at the Energy Department auditorium in Patna, attended by CM Nitish Kumar, Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, Energy Minister Vijendra Yadav, Additional Chief Secretary S Siddhartha, Secretary to the Chief Minister Kumar Ravi, Patna Divisional Commissioner Chandrashekher Singh, Patna DM Tyagarajan SM, and other dignitaries.

The government has also redesigned electricity bills to feature CM Nitish Kumar’s photo—an initiative serving both as an information tool and a political image-building measure.
