PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a significant power transmission infrastructure project in Tamil Nadu on July 27. The project, spearheaded by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) through its subsidiary POWERGRID Kudankulam Transmission Limited, forms part of the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) and is designed to evacuate 2,000 MW of electricity from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4.

The project involves the development of a 400 kV double circuit (quad) transmission line linking Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (Units 3 & 4) to the Tuticorin-II GIS Pooling Station. It also includes the installation of two 400 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) line terminal bays at the Tuticorin-II substation.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony, held in Tuticorin, saw the participation of Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan, Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister Thangam Thenarasu, Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P Geetha Jeevan, MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and senior officials from both central and state governments along with Power Grid.

Once completed, the transmission system will enable the evacuation of 2 GW of clean nuclear energy to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry—helping meet the growing power demand in southern India and advancing India’s climate and energy security objectives. It aligns with the national goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030.

As of June 30, Power Grid manages 284 substations, over 1,80,533 circuit kilometers of transmission lines, and 5,66,831 MVA of transformation capacity. With a transmission system availability of over 99.84 percent, the company continues to leverage advanced technologies, automation, and digital innovations to ensure operational excellence.
