TruAlt Bioenergy

TruAlt Bioenergy, India’s largest ethanol producer, has received authorisation as an Oil Marketing Company (OMC), empowering it to directly retail ethanol, Bio-CNG, petrol, and diesel across the country. This development positions TruAlt as one of the first private biofuel companies to venture into India’s retail fuel sector, marking a significant shift in the country’s clean energy landscape.

The company announced it will offer a blend of renewable and conventional fuels at its retail outlets, including ethanol (E93), Bio-CNG, petrol, diesel, electric vehicle (EV) charging, and battery swapping infrastructure.

“Securing OMC status marks a defining step in TruAlt Bioenergy’s growth journey. This milestone enables us to directly serve India’s evolving fuel needs while accelerating the shift toward cleaner energy,” said Vijay Nirani, Managing Director, TruAlt Bioenergy.

In its initial rollout, TruAlt plans to establish over 100 fuel stations in Karnataka and Maharashtra, offering a unified experience of biofuels and fossil fuels. At least 5% of these outlets will be located in remote areas, in line with the government’s inclusive infrastructure mandate. The expansion is projected to create over 2,000 jobs.

This move comes amid rising demand in India’s fuel market. Petroleum product consumption reached 239.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) in FY2024–25. Petrol usage grew by 7.5%, while aviation turbine fuel (ATF) surged by 8.9%. Notably, the diesel-to-petrol ratio has declined from 3.6 to 2.3 over the last decade, indicating a shift towards more diversified fuel usage and creating space for blended and cleaner fuel alternatives.

TruAlt also announced plans for a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant with an annual capacity of 10 crore litres. Once operational, it is expected to be among the world’s largest SAF production units leveraging ethanol as a key feedstock.

“Our model sources agri-residue and biomass from rural communities, creating a circular economy where we return health to the soil and wealth to the farmer,” Nirani added.
