Manohar Lal Khattar

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has approved the establishment of three additional 800 MW power generation units in Punjab, as announced by State Power Minister Harbhajan Singh on Friday. The approval came during the North Indian Power Ministers’ Conference, chaired by Khattar, with participation from ministers and senior officials from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Delhi.

During the conference, Harbhajan Singh strongly advocated for the expansion of Punjab’s power generation infrastructure, particularly at the Ropar thermal power plant. He highlighted that despite Punjab having its own coal reserves, a major hurdle lies in the Centre’s regulation that restricts coal transportation to within 1,000 kilometers. This policy has been hampering efforts to enhance thermal plant capacities across the state. The Centre’s nod to the new power units marks a significant development in addressing Punjab’s energy needs.
