NTPC H2 Bus

State-run power major NTPC has handed over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation (SIDCO), an undertaking of the Ladakh administration, a great endeavour towards India’s clean mobility mission. These buses will be deployed for commercial operations under NTPC’s ambitious green hydrogen initiative in the region.

This development comes on the heels of NTPC commissioning the world’s first hydrogen fuelling station integrated with a 1.7 MW solar plant at an altitude of 11,562 feet in Leh. As the highest green hydrogen mobility station globally, the facility is entirely powered by renewable energy, showcasing a breakthrough in sustainable transport at high altitudes.

The hydrogen mobility project is expected to offset around 350 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually while contributing 230 metric tonnes of pure oxygen to the atmosphere—equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting nearly 13,000 trees. This clean energy push not only aligns with India’s decarbonisation goals but also brings tangible ecological benefits to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

With this initiative, NTPC reinforces its leadership in India’s energy transition, meeting nearly a quarter of the country’s power demand while driving innovation in alternative fuels. The successful deployment of hydrogen fuel cell buses in Ladakh’s extreme terrain further validates India’s capabilities in scaling green technologies in remote, ecologically sensitive areas.
