India’s largest power utility, NTPC, has entered into a strategic agreement with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) to co-develop a clean energy transition roadmap that aligns with the nation’s net-zero target by 2070.

The comprehensive roadmap will model various scenarios across NTPC’s short-, medium-, and long-term strategies. It will estimate the required investments, identify diversification avenues, and assess the socio-economic impacts of the shift to cleaner energy systems.

NTPC stated that this collaboration will reinforce its overarching energy vision, which includes initiatives like green hydrogen pilot projects, floating solar photovoltaic systems, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, and carbon capture and utilization technologies.

Since its establishment in 1975, NTPC has played a central role in India’s power generation, currently contributing around 25% to the national grid. The company has committed to installing 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and has an additional 32 GW under construction, of which 13 GW is renewable.

In 2021, NTPC became the first major Indian utility to sign a UN Energy Compact, setting ambitious renewable energy targets. Its energy portfolio now includes solar, wind, and hydro in addition to thermal.

“Our aim is to foster responsible, sustainable economic development through an energy strategy that champions energy security, social inclusiveness, environmental stewardship, and growth powered by data, technology, and innovation. This agreement positions us to meet the rising demand from communities and industry while keeping us at the leading edge of the energy transition,” said Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC.

Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for SEforALL, added, “India continues to show climate leadership on the global stage, moving beyond commitment to concrete actions. We are excited to support NTPC to co-create a net-zero roadmap for India’s energy giant and laud their commitment to cleaner energy.”

SEforALL will work closely with NTPC to ensure that the roadmap supports India’s energy security goals and development agenda, including the national objective of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
