India's Clean Energy

India has recorded the third-largest growth in power generation capacity worldwide over the past five years, according to the latest report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), trailing only China and the United States. The report highlights India’s remarkable progress in expanding its power infrastructure across all energy sources to meet rapidly rising electricity demand.

The surge in demand is attributed to the growth of commercial and residential spaces, rising ownership of household appliances like air conditioners, and increased industrial consumption. To cater to this spike, India has strategically scaled its generation capacity, with a strong policy push for renewable energy playing a pivotal role.

The IEA report underscores the massive investment in clean energy, particularly in solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, which accounted for over half of India’s total non-fossil energy investments over the past five years. In 2024 alone, 83% of the power sector’s investment was directed toward clean energy initiatives—signaling a transformative shift in India’s energy landscape.

India also emerged as the top recipient of Development Finance Institution (DFI) funding for clean energy in 2024, securing approximately USD 2.4 billion in project-specific investments. These efforts not only underscore India’s commitment to sustainable development but also position the country as a global leader in the clean energy transition.
