The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change led India’s global charge against plastic pollution by hosting the national celebration of World Environment Day 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Held under the theme ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’, the event marked a call for innovation, collective action, and behavioral change to tackle the escalating crisis of plastic waste.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a video address, emphasized that environmental stewardship is deeply rooted in Indian culture and noted that India began taking concrete steps to combat plastic pollution even before it gained international prominence.
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, underscored the need to connect innovation with business opportunities to tackle plastic waste. He highlighted that vehicular and Yamuna river pollution remain critical issues in Delhi, and that solutions like electric buses and improved plastic waste management are key interventions. The Minister urged citizens to shun single-use plastics and emphasized the importance of technologies that promote recycling and reuse, linking them with the circular economy under the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) framework.
Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, said Delhi’s green initiatives are showing tangible results, including increased tree cover and ongoing greening of the Aravalli region.
Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, stressed that collective societal efforts and behavioral changes are fundamental to addressing plastic pollution. She also called for greater adoption of innovative technologies to replace single-use plastics.
The celebration featured participation from key government leaders, industry representatives, civil society, students, and officials from various states, following the ‘Whole of Government’ and ‘Whole of Society’ approach.
Two important publications were released:
- Government Initiatives on Ending Plastic Pollution, showcasing efforts by stakeholders across the board.
- A Compendium on Eco-Alternatives to Banned Single Use Plastics, highlighting sustainable product options from across India.
A National Plastic Waste Reporting Portal was launched to ensure transparent and streamlined monitoring of the plastic waste management chain — from collection to disposal — by Urban Local Bodies and District Panchayats.
Awards were conferred on 21 winners of the Ideas4LiFE initiative across seven sustainability themes. Over 69,000 pre-campaign events engaged nearly 2.1 million citizens nationwide.
A National Plastic Pollution Reduction Campaign was unveiled, featuring special initiatives in Tiger Reserves, rural and urban regions under Swachhta Hi Sewa, and government offices under Special Campaign 5.0. Youth engagement was encouraged through poetry, slogan writing, and street play competitions on anti-plastic themes.
A National Expo on Eco-Alternatives brought together 150 startups, recyclers, and local bodies showcasing cutting-edge technologies in plastic waste management. A dedicated pavilion for Mission LiFE and a student painting exhibition curated by the National Museum of Natural History added to the outreach.
India’s World Environment Day 2025 celebration underscored the nation’s leadership in combating plastic pollution through policy, innovation, and people’s participation.
