EV Charging Station

In a major stride towards sustainable transportation, Uttar Pradesh’s first solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station was inaugurated in Banthra under the Sarojininagar constituency recently. The initiative was led by Sarojininagar MLA Rajeshwar Singh, marking a significant milestone in the state’s green energy roadmap.

Speaking at the inauguration, Singh described solar energy as “a responsibility for Earth’s future, not just an alternative,” underlining its critical role in combating air pollution and climate change. He cited alarming statistics, noting that over 8 million people globally—and more than 2.5 million in India—die annually due to air pollution.

Drawing attention to Earth Overshoot Day, Singh explained that in 1972, humanity exceeded its annual natural resource limit by December 23, whereas in 2024, the date has drastically advanced to August 1. This, he said, is a stark warning of the unsustainable pace at which natural resources are being consumed.

Singh highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s growing EV ecosystem, with more than 3.75 lakh registered EVs in the state. He emphasised the government’s attractive subsidies for green mobility, adding that each EV can potentially save 1.5 million grams of CO₂ emissions annually. He also projected that with a 30 per cent EV adoption rate by 2030, India could save $60 billion in oil import costs every year.

He further lauded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ambitious solar mission, which aims to increase Uttar Pradesh’s solar capacity from 288 MW in 2017 to a staggering 22,000 MW by 2030, signalling a transformative shift in the state’s renewable energy outlook.
