India reaffirmed its leadership in driving inclusive and sustainable global energy governance during the BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting held in Brasília under Brazil’s presidency on 19 May 2025. Leading the Indian delegation, Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal underscored India’s commitment to clean energy growth, equitable access, and international cooperation in the energy sector.
Highlighting India’s energy transition journey, the Minister showcased a 90% growth in installed electricity capacity over the last decade—reaching 475 GW in 2025 and aiming for 900 GW by 2032. He spotlighted India’s emergence as the world’s third-largest producer of solar and wind energy, its milestone achievement of 20% ethanol blending, and ambitious targets including 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 and leadership in green hydrogen and smart grid technologies.
India also presented the launch of its domestic Carbon Credit Market and reiterated its support for global collaboration through initiatives like the Global Biofuels Alliance. The Minister emphasised energy efficiency measures, such as the Energy Conservation Sustainable Buildings Code and widespread rooftop solar initiatives.
Acknowledging the continued relevance of fossil fuels for developing economies, India advocated for cleaner technologies like coal gasification and carbon capture and urged BRICS members to strengthen cooperation for more resilient, diversified energy systems.
In a strategic move, India invited BRICS nations to the next BRICS Energy Gathering in 2026, to be hosted under India’s chairship, reaffirming its commitment to leading the Global South’s energy agenda.
The BRICS Energy Ministers jointly adopted a Communiqué reinforcing commitments to energy security, SDG 7 goals, and a balanced energy transition.
