GAIL MoU with Karnataka Government

GAIL (India) Limited, the nation’s leading public sector enterprise in the natural gas sector, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to develop approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy (RE) capacity in the state. The initiative entails a substantial investment of ₹5,000 crores, further strengthening Karnataka’s standing as a prime destination for sustainable energy development.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, M.B. Patil, and Minister for Energy, K. J. George. The signing event also saw the participation of GAIL executives Parvesh Chug, Executive Director (Renewable Energy), and Sumit Kishore, Executive Director (Marketing).

Aligned with its ambitious goal to achieve 100% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, GAIL aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio significantly. To reach its decarbonization target, the company estimates a requirement of around 3,500 MW of renewable capacity for captive consumption. Currently, GAIL’s installed renewable capacity stands at 135 MW, including 38.1 MW of wind energy already operational in Karnataka.

Recognising Karnataka’s progressive policy environment and its leadership in clean energy, GAIL intends to scale up its operations through a diversified mix of renewable energy projects such as ground-mounted solar, rooftop solar, floating solar, wind energy, and energy storage systems. The company also plans to acquire land parcels within Solar Parks in Karnataka to facilitate faster execution of its projects under a dedicated capital expenditure framework.

Highlighting the significance of the partnership, Industries Minister M.B. Patil said the MoU underscores Karnataka’s ongoing commitment to fostering clean energy investments while supporting industrial growth. He emphasized that the state’s enabling policy framework, availability of skilled talent, and land resources make it an ideal destination for sustainability-focused enterprises.

Energy Minister K. J. George noted that the collaboration with GAIL reinforces Karnataka’s leadership in renewable energy and will bolster the state’s ambitions of becoming a green energy hub. He added that the initiative would catalyze job creation and infrastructure development, contributing to India’s broader clean energy transition.

The MoU represents a strategic step toward a long-term collaboration between GAIL and the Government of Karnataka, aiming to support the state’s economic development while advancing national climate goals. The meeting also witnessed the presence of senior government officials, including Dr. Selvakumar S., Principal Secretary, Industries Department, and Gunjan Krishna, Commissioner for Industrial Development and Director, Industries and Commerce.
