Uttar Pradesh is set to experience a favourable power situation in the financial year 2025-26, with a projected annual surplus of 4,391 megawatts (MW) in peak demand and 25,720 million units (MU) in energy availability, as per the latest Load Generation Balance Report (LGBR) by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
The state’s peak demand for 2025-26 is anticipated to reach 33,849 MW in June, with availability expected to surpass this at 38,240 MW, ensuring a surplus of 13%. The total energy requirement for the year is projected at 1,75,170 MU, while the availability will be 2,00,890 MU, leading to a 14.7% energy surplus.
Summer months, known for heightened demand, are also expected to remain in surplus. June 2025 is forecasted to have a peak surplus of 3,081 MW (9.1%) and a nominal energy surplus of 22 MU. July is expected to perform even better, with a peak surplus of 4,733 MW (14.1%) and 155 MU in energy.

The report highlights that October and December will see the highest monthly surpluses in peak power, both at 4,756 MW (20.2%). January 2026 is anticipated to record the largest energy surplus of the year, with 3,826 MU. However, May 2025 is expected to witness a minor energy deficit of 1.0% (180 MU), despite a peak surplus of 968 MW, underscoring the challenge of managing sustained high consumption.

The northern region, including Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab, is expected to meet the energy requirement fully, while Uttar Pradesh, along with Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand, will see a marginal gap in energy supply, ranging from 0.2% to 0.4%.
The report notes that Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Meghalaya are expected to be surplus in both peak and energy on an annual basis for 2025-26. States like Haryana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and others will be surplus only in terms of energy, while Uttarakhand and DVC will be surplus in peak demand only.
