Hardeep Singh Puri

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, on Tuesday emphasised India’s readiness to “collaborate openly” in building an inclusive global energy future. Addressing a conference on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Puri highlighted the corridor as a testament to India’s role as a global energy bridge.

“India is ready to lead responsibly, collaborate openly and build sustainably as we build an inclusive global energy future,” he stated.

Puri described IMEC not just as a transport route but as a visionary attempt to rekindle the ancient “Golden Road”—once a vital conduit for trade and travel. Through IMEC, India seeks to integrate energy, trade, and digital infrastructure, while advancing clean energy solutions such as undersea cables and hydrogen pipelines.

Highlighting India’s diversified energy portfolio, he noted that the country has fortified global energy partnerships despite being a major crude oil importer. At the same time, India is enhancing domestic energy production, promoting ethanol blending, and leading green hydrogen initiatives.

Puri shared that since he assumed charge in 2021, India’s crude oil consumption has increased from 5 million to 5.5 million barrels per day, a figure projected to grow to 13.2 million barrels per day by 2050, driven by robust economic expansion.

“India’s energy strategy reflects its economic ambition and imminent place in global leadership,” he asserted, adding that energy is not merely an input for economic growth but a reflection of a nation’s confidence, ambition, and long-term direction.
